AI agents
An AI agent is software that uses an AI model to plan and carry out multi-step tasks by calling tools - running code, browsing websites or operating apps - instead of only replying with text.
A chatbot answers a message; an agent works toward a goal. It breaks the goal into steps, chooses a tool for each step (a web browser, a code interpreter, an API), looks at the result and decides what to do next.
Agents differ in how much they do on their own: some ask for approval before every action, others run until the task is finished. Important properties are which tools they can use, whether they keep memory between sessions, and what they can access.
